Back to the grind.

I’d be lying if I told you that today was easy. Nothing went wrong. It was just really hard to get back into the swing of things after being away from my office for 12 days. And I must admit, it was a really great and much needed 12 days off.

Surprisingly enough, I gave myself enough time to get ready, eat breakfast and have a cup of coffee before heading off to work. I think I just found it most challenging to get my head back in the game. I had a hard time focusing and immediately felt overwhelmed by my meetings and inbox. But, I powered through.

I’m pretty proud, too. I made a vow to work on being present this year, and today, I tried something new. I didn’t bring my laptop to any meetings today. I brought my iPad, which is equipped with a bluetooth keyboard, and has Evernote installed (which I use for just about everything). I also brought a notebook and a pen. I decided that when I bring my laptop to meetings, I multitask. I’ve got Skype open and I’m having a separate conversation that’s completely unrelated to the meeting I’m attending. I’m checking email. I’m browsing the Internet. I’m doing other work. In other words, I’m not present. In fact, I’m all over the freakin’ place. The meetings I attended sans laptop were wonderful. I was engaged, added ideas to the conversation and provided value while being fully focused. It was really a great feeling. And now I’m exhausted.

I also got my butt back to the gym. It’s been a while (ok, a long while) due to the holidays and getting sick. Man, it felt really good to get back to the gym. I miss the adrenaline. :)

Day 1 of being present = success.

"This guy’s walking down the street when he falls in a hole. The walls are so steep he can’t get out. A doctor passes by and the guy shouts up, ‘Hey you. Can you help me out?’ The doctor writes a prescription, throws it down in the hole and moves on. Then a priest comes along and the guy shouts up, ‘Father, I’m down in this hole can you help me out?’ The priest writes out a prayer, throws it down in the hole and moves on. Then a friend walks by, ‘Hey, Joe, it’s me can you help me out?’ And the friend jumps in the hole. Our guy says, ‘Are you stupid? Now we’re both down here.’ The friend says, ‘Yeah, but I’ve been down here before and I know the way out."

"But humming through me like a third rail was poetry, the myth that if I could shuffle the right words into the right order, i could get my story straight, write myself into an existence that included the company of sacred misfit poets whose pages had kept me company as a kid. Showing up at a normal job was just too hard."

The Cosmopolitan

This week, I’m in Vegas for the WOMMA Summit and the conference is in The Cosmopolitan Hotel. Naturally, this is where we’re staying. And OMG. Just… OMG.

My room is larger than my apartment (just about).

King bed? Yes, please.

Walk through the shower to get to the Japanese Bathtub.

Venture out to the terrace for a view of Las Vegas.

The hotel is so modern and this hotel room is essentially decorated and furnished like my dream apartment. Ahhhh….
