Back to the grind.

I’d be lying if I told you that today was easy. Nothing went wrong. It was just really hard to get back into the swing of things after being away from my office for 12 days. And I must admit, it was a really great and much needed 12 days off.

Surprisingly enough, I gave myself enough time to get ready, eat breakfast and have a cup of coffee before heading off to work. I think I just found it most challenging to get my head back in the game. I had a hard time focusing and immediately felt overwhelmed by my meetings and inbox. But, I powered through.

I’m pretty proud, too. I made a vow to work on being present this year, and today, I tried something new. I didn’t bring my laptop to any meetings today. I brought my iPad, which is equipped with a bluetooth keyboard, and has Evernote installed (which I use for just about everything). I also brought a notebook and a pen. I decided that when I bring my laptop to meetings, I multitask. I’ve got Skype open and I’m having a separate conversation that’s completely unrelated to the meeting I’m attending. I’m checking email. I’m browsing the Internet. I’m doing other work. In other words, I’m not present. In fact, I’m all over the freakin’ place. The meetings I attended sans laptop were wonderful. I was engaged, added ideas to the conversation and provided value while being fully focused. It was really a great feeling. And now I’m exhausted.

I also got my butt back to the gym. It’s been a while (ok, a long while) due to the holidays and getting sick. Man, it felt really good to get back to the gym. I miss the adrenaline. :)

Day 1 of being present = success.
